Tenerife is a first-class hiking destination, and among all its trails two stand out above the rest: the Anaga Rural Park in the north and the Barranco del Infierno in the south. Both are unique experiences, but very different from each other. If you have limited time and cannot decide which to choose, or if you want to plan a complete excursion that includes both, this article is for you.
At Tenerife Top Tours, we have been guiding hikers along the most spectacular routes on the island for over 15 years. Today we help you discover which of these two natural gems best suits your preferences and fitness level.
Anaga: The Magical Forest of Northern Tenerife
The Anaga Rural Park is one of the most biodiverse nature reserves in Europe. Declared a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 2015, this mountain massif in the far northeastern corner of Tenerife is home to the most extensive and best-preserved laurisilva forest in the world. Its trails wind through giant ferns, ancient trees and mist-shrouded landscapes that seem straight out of a fairy tale.
Our Forest of Enigmas circular route starts from the Ermita de la Cruz del Carmen and lasts 2.5 hours at easy difficulty, perfect for the whole family. Those looking for a more complete experience can opt for our Private Discover Anaga excursion, which includes Santa Cruz, Playa de Las Teresitas, the village of Taganana and La Laguna UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Anaga is perfect for you if:
- You are fascinated by lush nature and primeval forests
- You are looking for an easy activity suitable for children and elderly visitors
- You want to combine hiking with cultural tourism and local gastronomy
- You prefer to explore the green, humid north of Tenerife
Barranco del Infierno: The Hidden Waterfall of Southern Tenerife
The Barranco del Infierno, located in Adeje, is the most emblematic trail in southern Tenerife. Its name perfectly evokes the impression it makes: a wild gorge, dramatic volcanic walls and an interior waterfall of almost 200 metres as the ultimate destination. As a Protected Natural Area with controlled access, it is essential to book in advance.
The trail covers 6.5 km with a duration of approximately 3.5 hours and medium-low difficulty. The starting point is 350 metres above sea level and offers extraordinary panoramic views across the southern coastline from the very beginning. Tenerife Top Tours also organises a complete experience combining the trail with a tour of the historic centre of Adeje and lunch included.
The Barranco del Infierno is perfect for you if:
- You are seeking the thrill of reaching a spectacular waterfall
- You are staying in the south of Tenerife (Costa Adeje, Playa de las Américas)
- You have a moderate fitness level and are not put off by a trail lasting over 3 hours
- You want an experience in a dramatic and wild volcanic environment
Comparison: Anaga vs. Barranco del Infierno
Both trails are Protected Natural Areas with restricted access, guaranteeing a quality experience. Anaga offers a shorter, more accessible route through a magical laurisilva forest, while the Barranco del Infierno proposes a longer journey towards a monumental waterfall. The first is ideal for those visiting the north of the island; the second is unmissable if you are staying in the south.
Why choose when you can do both? If your stay in Tenerife lasts more than two days, we recommend doing both excursions: each will reveal a completely different and surprising side of the island.
