The 3 Most Popular Hiking Trails in Tenerife You Can’t Miss

If there’s one thing we absolutely love about Tenerife, besides its perfect climate and natural diversity, it’s the incredible hiking routes. Trekking across this volcanic island feels like traveling through multiple worlds: lush forests, dramatic cliffs, hidden ravines, scenic viewpoints, and ocean views that take our breath away.

Today we want to share our three favorite hiking trails in Tenerife: the Anaga Rural Park, the Masca Gorge, and the iconic Barranco del Infierno in Adeje. Let’s discover together why these trails are a must for every hiking enthusiast!

1. Anaga Rural Park: the magic of the laurel forest

Located in the northeast of the island, Anaga is a natural treasure declared a Biosphere Reserve. Its trails wind through misty mountain landscapes covered in ancient laurel forest, creating an atmosphere straight out of a fairytale.

Here we can enjoy famous routes like the “Path of the Senses”, perfect for families or beginners, or the “Vueltas Trail”, which offers incredible views of Taganana village. For seasoned hikers, we recommend the route from Chamorga to the Anaga Lighthouse, a more demanding but unforgettable experience.

💡 Tip: Fog can appear suddenly in Anaga, so always bring a jacket and a raincoat, even if it’s sunny elsewhere on the island.

2. Masca: Tenerife’s most spectacular gorge

The Masca trail is one of the most famous and breathtaking hikes in the Canary Islands. It starts in the picturesque village of Masca, in the Teno Rural Park, and descends through a narrow gorge all the way to the ocean.

Over three hours of hiking downhill (plus the same uphill if you don’t take the return boat), we walk between towering volcanic cliffs, cross streams and waterfalls, and marvel at untamed nature. It’s a thrilling and unforgettable adventure.

⚠️ Currently, Masca requires advance booking and controlled access to ensure safety and preserve the environment.

3. Barranco del Infierno: the natural gem of Adeje

Barranco del Infierno is undoubtedly the top hiking trail in southern Tenerife. This medium-to-easy route takes us from the historic town of Adeje to a spectacular waterfall hidden deep in the mountains.

The 6.5 km round trip passes through a Special Natural Reserve where we can spot endemic plants like dragon trees, euphorbia and mastic trees, as well as birds of prey soaring above the cliffs. The most impressive part? How the canyon closes in around us as we walk deeper into its heart.

🎟️ Advance booking is required to enter Barranco del Infierno, as daily visitor numbers are limited to protect this fragile ecosystem.

Which one is our favorite?

Honestly, we can’t pick just one. Each of these trails has its own charm: the mysticism of Anaga, the adventure of Masca, and the wild beauty of Barranco del Infierno. The best way is to plan them on different days and enjoy each one fully—with the right gear and full respect for nature.

So if you’re looking for outdoor plans in Tenerife, don’t hesitate: grab your hiking boots, pack your backpack and join us to discover the island’s most amazing trails. See you on the path!
